A fascinating part of Australia’s history is the secretive town of Woomera.

Locked off to the public until 1982 it was purpose built to specifically conduct tests for defence. It is literally in the middle if nowhere half way between Port Augusta and Coober Pedy.

You really do start to feel yourself heading into the desert now. The landscape, dry air and everyone’s favourite, the dust.

Worth a stop not only to break the trip but to check out the rocket park. The atmosphere of the town is also quite eerie. Feels like you’re in an 80s movie about alien abductions.
